  • Maton

The Maton name is a derivative of the words “May” and “Tone”.

Until the mid 1930s an Australian guitar manufacturing industry was virtually nonexistent. Good quality guitars were hard to find and at this time the best guitars came from the U.S.A. Bill May, a Melbourne-born jazz musician, woodwork teacher and luthier decided to change all that.

  • ibanez

The story of Ibanez is one of rapid dominance and near constant reinvention. Many of us know the recent history of the company’s shred-friendly models and have owned an RG or S-Series guitar in our time. However, the Ibanez story starts much earlier, in 1908, with a company called Hoshino Gakki, a sheet music and music-products distributor in Nagoya, Japan.

Ibanez started in the guitar business by importing high-end classical guitars, originally made by the renowned Spanish guitar builder Salvador Ibáñez, for sale in Japan in the late ‘20s. The company switched to making guitars in the 1930s, adopting the name of the well-respected maker. With the advent of rock ‘n’ roll, the company began building budget guitars designed for export. These early low-quality entry-level guitars looked odd and were typical of those found in department stores and catalogs.

  • Seagull
In the province of Quebec, Canada, in a little town known as LaPatrie, and I mean very little (just under 500 people), about half of the town folk are guitar makers.  For some reason, unknown to me, I have yet to come across a Canadian-made acoustic guitar that lacks in craftsmanship, and the Seagull is no exception.  Seagull Guitar Company's parent company is Godin Guitars (another fine Canadian guitar making company that also owns and makes fine LaPatrie Classical Guitars). The hard-working people at the Seagull crafting station in LaPatrie take great pride in producing these guitars that are played around the world.  Because these Seagulls are built from start to finish with painstaking detail and craftsmanship in LaPatrie, complete control on quality and consistency is delivered on every Seagull model.  I have literally scoured the web for a single negative review on Seagull guitars and I cannot find anything less than 5 stars, so I had to get my hands on one of these to play, touch, listen and see for myself!
  • Gretsch
Gretsch is an American company that manufactures guitars, basses and drums. The company was founded in 1883 by Friedrich Gretsch, a 27-year-old German immigrant, shortly after his arrival to the United States. Friedrich Gretsch manufactured banjos, tambourines, and drums until his death in 1895. In 1916, his son, Fred Gretsch Sr. moved operations to Brooklyn, New York where Gretsch went on to become one of the most prominent manufacturers of American musical instruments.
  • Epiphone

    Epiphone: 140 Years

Epiphone is one of American's oldest and most revered instrument makers.  Since 1873, Epiphone has made instruments for every style of popular music and in 2013 will celebrate its 140th anniversary.

The name Epiphone evokes both history and the spirit of invention. The “House of Stathopoulo” has played a central role in every great musical era from the mandolin craze of the early 1900s to jazz age guitars of the 1920s; from swing era archtops through post-war pop, jazz, r&b, and early rock n' roll; and from the "British Invasion" to heavy metal, punk, grunge, and thrash. And now, in the 21st century, new Epiphone technical breakthroughs such as the ProBucker™ pickup, series parallel switching, built-in KillSwitch™ pots, the Shadow NanoFlex™ and NanoMag™ pickup systems, and premier acoustic/electric guitars with the eSonic™ preamp have brought Epiphone to a new generation.
