Like the Blues model, the Heavy Blues has more muscle than a standard single coil. It was first intended for the bridge position, where it's power and increased lows and mids will complement the neck and middle positions. It can also function as a neck or middle position pickup if more warmth and body and less glassiness and quack are called for. DiMarzio recommends using 500k controls for extended frequency response, although there's no problem using 250k controls if you like the warmer tone they provide.
